Posed Wedding Portraits. Why They are Bad.

I am often asked to do multitude of posed shots at weddings, which I am not a big fan of. Don’t get me wrong, posed wedding portraits have their time and place, but I try to be judicious in how I use them – mainly focusing on the standard family portraits. All of the other cutesy stuff I avoid like the black plague. And to our left is the reason why:

I have two words for you – Glamour Shots. Oh the horror. And to think, I once thought they were pretty cool. It’s amazing looking back now. What the hell were we thinking?

So what does this have to do with posed wedding portraits? Everything! Those neat little trendy shots that everyone thinks are so cool right now won’t be twenty years down the road. Your kids will giggle when they look at your wedding album and I don’t want that, as should you.

This is why I try to stick to a photojournalistic approach whenever possible. Natural shots showing the emotion of the moment are timeless. Trust me, trendy shots won’t look cool down the road. Trends are never timeless. Think about it. Bell bottoms, mullets, parachute pants, and glamour shots were all hot once upon a time – not so much now are they? Think about that when shooting today’s coolest wedding poses.
